The Time is Now

"We believe in connection, not catastrophe. Actual emergencies look more like people coming together than cities falling apart.”- San Francisco Department of Emergency Management.

Tackling the zombie apocalypse will make us stronger, more resilient, and ready to face any disaster that comes our way, together.

FAQ's

WHO

Who is playing?

Everyone that wants to survive the apocalypse! Teams are comprised of 5-6 players, so if you'd like to be the strongest, wittiest, or sassiest apocalypse survival crew, sign up with four or five of your friends. Players are welcome to come alone or in a small group since we'll help match you with other players at the beginning of the game.

WHAT

What is this game?

Armed with a cell phone with a digital camera, each team solves missions, iinteracts with community partners, avoids zombies, learns survival tactics. Along the way you'll have a chance to exercise your dashing creativity and brave ridiculousness to compete with others on creating epic photos and videos. Afterward, we will re-convene for dancing, excellent prizes, and community resiliency mapping.

WHERE

Where is the event?

It's a secret. We'll tell you a few days before the event. Make sure to register on this site!

When

When is the event?

The game goes down rain or shine on Saturday September 15th.

Arrive no later than 12 PM for check in, because the game begins promptly at 12:15 PM*

***Pre-formed teams of 5-6 players should arrive no later than 12 PM to check in.  Those looking looking to join forces with others should arrive earlier to mingle, size up the competition, and choose their heroic teammates.

The game will begin at 12:15 PM, with play time lasting until roughly 2 PM.  At that point, the game will prompt all players to return to a secret location, where all teams can share high-fives and hug surviving teammates before the judging presentation.  We'll be wrapped up by 3 PM.

WHY

Why are we doing this?

Because Somerville knows how to have a good time. This is also a chance to meet new neighbors, community leaders, and solve zombie-related missions while screaming "braaaains". This is also a disaster preparedness training. We live in uncertain times, faced with emergency natural disasters and attacks. Do you know what to do in an urban emergency? We'd like to learn a few things with you in this game, so that we can be count on each other as neighbors and friends.

Who can play?

Is it all ages?

Yes! This game is best suited for children that can walk around a lot for 1.5 hours in the Union Square area. We have mission accomodations for teams with players under the age of 12, as well as more sophisticated missions for teams over the age of 12. Whether you are 2 or 52, you will have a blast and learn a lot. Join us!

WHAT

What should I bring with me?

- iPhone 4 or later! One player on each team will download the game app (free of charge) onto their iphone to receive missions. It is important that at least one of your players has at least an iPhone 4 phone, or else you won't be able to play. (If you don't have an iPhone but want to participate, we'll find a solution! Contact: rebecca.michelson@gmail.com)

- A playful and resilient attitude!

-Good walking shoes, clothes appropriate to the weather outdoors, and anything else you usually bring when you leave the house (wallets, purses, ID's, etc.).

-If you want to coordinate outfits with your team in advance (camo? color-coordination?)

WINNING

How do I win?

The winning team is determined by adding points earned during the game.  The more missions your team solves correctly during the mission portion of the game, the better.  However, your team stands to earn between a third and half of its point total based on how creative their photos and videos are (to be judged by a zombie expert panel). So, you want to solve lots of missions, but you also want to create incredible photos and videos! Teams that do both those things, will do well.

Getting Around

How will I get around during the game?

The whole game is played on foot (hence the walking shoes). Some of the game challenges will be physical, but there will always be modified options to complete challenges.

Prep

Do I need to be in shape?

Enthusiasm and creativity are more important than fitness in this game.  But you might need to run occasionally to avoid the undead. Ultimately, if you're comfortable standing and walking around for two hours, you're fit enough to play.

“We all hope we would be the person who would not leave anyone behind, but we really don’t know.

In times of catastrophes some people find their humanity, while others lose theirs."
